About 11v11 soccer

Eleven-a-side is the full game. Ten outfield players allow for specialist roles such as full-backs, holding midfielders and wingers, and the choice of formation says a lot about how a team wants to play. At youth level the best formation is usually the one your players understand, not the one a professional team uses.

Who plays it: commonly from under-13 upward. The field: A full-sized field with full-sized goals. Age groups and field sizes vary from league to league, so check your own league's rules.

There are 11 11v11 formations in the sheet maker. Each has its own printable lineup sheet and a short guide to its strengths and weaknesses:

  • 4-4-2: Teams moving up to the full-sized game for the first time, and squads without one standout playmaker.
  • 4-4-2 Diamond: Teams with energetic full-backs and a group of midfielders who are better on the ball than on the wing.
  • 4-3-3: Teams with quick wide players who like to run at defenders and a squad comfortable passing through midfield.
  • 4-2-3-1: Balanced squads that want security in midfield without giving up attacking numbers.

Want it filled in for you?

The free SOXY app does the parts a web page cannot. It keeps your roster, knows which players have said they are coming, and fills all four quarters so playing time comes out even. It rotates the goalkeeper, lets you drag players between positions, saves a lineup for every game, and prints this same sheet with the field, both coaches and the referees already on it.
