About 6v6 soccer

Six-a-side adds one more outfield player, which is enough to introduce the idea of a back, a middle and a front. Players start to learn that somebody should stay behind the ball and somebody should stay ahead of it, while still getting plenty of touches.

Who plays it: commonly younger age groups, around under-8 to under-9. The field: A small field, a little longer and wider than five-a-side. Age groups and field sizes vary from league to league, so check your own league's rules.

6v6 formations

There are 4 6v6 formations in the sheet maker. Each has its own printable lineup sheet and a short guide to its strengths and weaknesses:

• 2-2-1: Most six-a-side teams as a starting shape.
• 2-1-2: Attack-minded groups with one player who loves being on the ball.
• 1-3-1: Teams that pass well and have a calm, quick defender.
• 3-1-1: Short-term use against a much stronger opponent, or for very new teams.
