The 6v6 3-1-1 formation
The 3-1-1 lines up three defenders, one midfielder and one forward. It is the safest six-a-side shape, useful when a team is struggling to keep the ball out of its own net.
Strengths
- Very hard to break down
- Outside defenders can carry the ball forward into space
- Clear, simple jobs
Weaknesses
- Few attacking options
- Can teach players to stay back rather than join in
Best for
Short-term use against a much stronger opponent, or for very new teams.
Coaching tip
Make it a rule that at least one of the three defenders joins every attack.

Want it filled in for you?
The free SOXY app does the parts a web page cannot. It keeps your roster, knows which players have said they are coming, and fills all four quarters so playing time comes out even. It rotates the goalkeeper, lets you drag players between positions, saves a lineup for every game, and prints this same sheet with the field, both coaches and the referees already on it.
