About 9v9 soccer

Nine-a-side is the bridge to the full game. Eight outfield players are enough for shapes that look like the eleven-a-side formations with a couple of positions removed, and offside usually applies. Choosing a nine-a-side formation that mirrors the shape your players will meet later makes the next step easier.

Who plays it: commonly around under-11 and under-12. The field: A three-quarter-sized field with larger goals than the small-sided formats. Age groups and field sizes vary from league to league, so check your own league's rules.

9v9 formations

There are 6 9v9 formations in the sheet maker. Each has its own printable lineup sheet and a short guide to its strengths and weaknesses:

  • 2-3-3: Teams that want to press high and teach possession soccer.
  • 3-3-2: Most nine-a-side teams, especially in their first season at this format.
  • 3-2-3: Teams with two strong, hard-running central midfielders.
  • 2-4-2: Fit teams with wide players who are happy to defend.
  • 3-4-1: Teams with one strong forward and plenty of midfielders, or when protecting a lead.
  • 2-3-2-1: Technical teams with clever attacking midfielders rather than out-and-out wingers.

Want it filled in for you?

The free SOXY app does the parts a web page cannot. It keeps your roster, knows which players have said they are coming, and fills all four quarters so playing time comes out even. It rotates the goalkeeper, lets you drag players between positions, saves a lineup for every game, and prints this same sheet with the field, both coaches and the referees already on it.
