The 9v9 3-3-2 formation
The 3-3-2 gives a nine-a-side team three defenders, three midfielders and two strikers. It is the steady, all-round choice at this size, with a secure back line and a partnership up front.
Strengths
- Three at the back cover the width of the smaller field
- Two strikers support each other
- Balanced between attack and defence
Weaknesses
- Less natural width going forward than a three-forward shape
- Outside midfielders have to provide the crosses
Best for
Most nine-a-side teams, especially in their first season at this format.
Coaching tip
Have the outside defenders step forward into midfield when your team has the ball on their side.

Want it filled in for you?
The free SOXY app does the parts a web page cannot. It keeps your roster, knows which players have said they are coming, and fills all four quarters so playing time comes out even. It rotates the goalkeeper, lets you drag players between positions, saves a lineup for every game, and prints this same sheet with the field, both coaches and the referees already on it.
