The 11v11 3-4-3 formation

The 3-4-3 fields three defenders, four midfielders across the pitch and three forwards. It commits seven players to the middle and attacking thirds, which makes it one of the more aggressive full-sided shapes.

Strengths

  • Three forwards stretch a back line across the whole width
  • Wide midfielders and wingers can overload a full-back
  • Plenty of options for a quick, direct attack

Weaknesses

  • Only three at the back when possession is lost
  • Two central midfielders can be outnumbered

Best for

Confident, fit teams that expect to have more of the ball than the opponent.

Coaching tip

Drill the wide midfielders to sprint back and form a five whenever the ball is lost.
