The 11v11 4-1-2-3 formation

The 4-1-2-3 is a 4-3-3 with the midfield triangle pointing backwards: one deep midfielder, two more advanced midfielders ahead, and three forwards. The deep player sets the tempo while the two number eights join the attack.

Strengths

  • A clear playmaker position at the base of midfield
  • Two advanced midfielders arrive late in the box
  • Wingers keep the field wide

Weaknesses

  • The deep midfielder is exposed if both number eights go forward together
  • Requires players who are comfortable receiving under pressure

Best for

Technically confident teams that want to build from the back through one composed midfielder.

Coaching tip

Stagger the two advanced midfielders: one near the ball, one arriving at the far post.
