The 11v11 3-5-2 formation

The 3-5-2 uses three centre-backs, a midfield five that includes two wing-backs, and two strikers. The wing-backs are the key: they defend like full-backs and attack like wingers, giving numbers in the centre at both ends.

Strengths

• Three centre-backs comfortably cover two opposing strikers
• Five in midfield controls the middle
• Two strikers to partner each other

Weaknesses

• Wing-backs need a lot of stamina
• Space behind the wing-backs can be attacked by quick wide players

Best for

Squads with three solid central defenders and two tireless wide players.

Coaching tip

When one wing-back goes forward, ask the far-side one to tuck in and make a back four.
