The 11v11 3-4-3 Diamond formation

The 3-4-3 Diamond keeps three defenders and three forwards but arranges the four midfielders as a diamond: a holder, two central players and a playmaker. It floods the centre of the pitch while the forwards provide the width.

Strengths

  • Numbers in central midfield make it easy to keep the ball
  • A link player between midfield and the forward line
  • Wingers stay high and wide to stretch defenders

Weaknesses

  • Very little natural cover on the flanks behind the wingers
  • Demands composure from the three defenders when pressed

Best for

Possession-minded teams with strong one-on-one defenders.

Coaching tip

Teach the outside centre-backs to step out wide early, before the opponent's winger receives the ball.
