The 11v11 3-4-1-2 formation

The 3-4-1-2 lines up three centre-backs, a midfield four with wing-backs, one attacking midfielder in the hole and two strikers. The number ten connects the midfield to the front pair and is the creative heart of the shape.

Strengths

• A free playmaker between the lines
• Two strikers occupy both opposing centre-backs
• Three centre-backs give a solid base

Weaknesses

• Width depends entirely on the wing-backs
• If the playmaker is marked out of the game, attacks can stall

Best for

Teams with one especially creative player and two forwards who work well together.

Coaching tip

Ask the strikers to split wide when the number ten has the ball, opening a lane through the middle.
