The 11v11 4-1-3-2 formation
The 4-1-3-2 sits one holding midfielder in front of the back four, three midfielders across the pitch ahead of them, and two strikers. The single anchor frees the rest of the midfield to support a front pair.
Strengths
- Two strikers plus three supporting midfielders give real attacking weight
- A dedicated screen in front of the centre-backs
- Keeps width in midfield
Weaknesses
- The lone holder has a lot of ground to cover alone
- Gaps appear either side of the anchor if midfielders do not recover
Best for
Attack-minded teams with one disciplined, positionally aware midfielder.
Coaching tip
Tell the anchor their touchline is the width of the penalty area: do not get dragged out to the wings.
