The 10v10 3-4-2 Diamond formation

The 3-4-2 Diamond shapes the ten-a-side midfield as a diamond in front of three defenders, with two strikers ahead. One midfielder screens, two play either side and one supports the forwards.

Strengths

  • Strong through the centre of the pitch
  • A supporting midfielder close to the two strikers
  • A clear holding role in front of the defence

Weaknesses

  • Narrow: opponents will find room near the touchlines
  • Side midfielders have to cover wide areas as well as the middle

Best for

Sides with more central midfielders than wingers.

Coaching tip

Use the strikers to chase wide when the ball goes to an opposing full-back, so the diamond can stay compact.

Want it filled in for you?

The free SOXY app does the parts a web page cannot. It keeps your roster, knows which players have said they are coming, and fills all four quarters so playing time comes out even. It rotates the goalkeeper, lets you drag players between positions, saves a lineup for every game, and prints this same sheet with the field, both coaches and the referees already on it.
