The 5v5 2-2 formation
The 2-2 is a square: two players at the back and two in front, ahead of the goalkeeper. It is the simplest five-a-side shape and a good first lesson in spreading out instead of chasing the ball in a swarm.
Strengths
- Easy to explain to the youngest players
- Always a teammate alongside and one ahead or behind
- Balanced between attack and defence
Weaknesses
- The square can go flat, leaving no passing angles
- No one occupies the middle of the field
Best for
First-time teams learning to keep some shape.
Coaching tip
Encourage the back two to dribble forward and the front two to drop back, so players swap roles naturally.

Want it filled in for you?
The free SOXY app does the parts a web page cannot. It keeps your roster, knows which players have said they are coming, and fills all four quarters so playing time comes out even. It rotates the goalkeeper, lets you drag players between positions, saves a lineup for every game, and prints this same sheet with the field, both coaches and the referees already on it.
