The 5v5 2-1-1 formation
The 2-1-1 keeps two players back, one in the middle and one forward. On a five-a-side field it is a careful shape that gives the two defenders a link player before the ball reaches the attacker.
Strengths
- Two defenders give security
- A link player makes it easier to play out from the back
- Clear line of players up the middle
Weaknesses
- Narrow, with little width in attack
- Only one player high up the field
Best for
Teams that lose the ball near their own goal and need a safer way to build.
Coaching tip
Ask the two defenders to spread to the sidelines when your goalkeeper has the ball.

Want it filled in for you?
The free SOXY app does the parts a web page cannot. It keeps your roster, knows which players have said they are coming, and fills all four quarters so playing time comes out even. It rotates the goalkeeper, lets you drag players between positions, saves a lineup for every game, and prints this same sheet with the field, both coaches and the referees already on it.
