The 7v7 3-2-1 formation

The 3-2-1 sets seven-a-side players out as three defenders, two midfielders and one striker, like a pyramid pointing forward. It is a secure shape for teams that are still learning to defend as a group.

Strengths

  • Three defenders make it hard to be caught out
  • A simple structure for younger players
  • Outside defenders can join the attack down the wings

Weaknesses

  • Few players high up the pitch
  • Relies on defenders being willing to go forward

Best for

Newer teams, or sides that have been conceding a lot of goals.

Coaching tip

Give the outside defenders permission to attack: one goes, the other two stay.

Want it filled in for you?

The free SOXY app does the parts a web page cannot. It keeps your roster, knows which players have said they are coming, and fills all four quarters so playing time comes out even. It rotates the goalkeeper, lets you drag players between positions, saves a lineup for every game, and prints this same sheet with the field, both coaches and the referees already on it.
