The 7v7 2-2-2 formation

The 2-2-2 lines up three pairs: two defenders, two midfielders and two forwards. Everyone on a seven-a-side team has a partner, which makes it easy to explain covering for each other.

Strengths

  • Every player has a partner alongside
  • Two forwards to press and to share goals
  • Simple to set up at kick-offs and restarts

Weaknesses

  • Little natural width, so play can get crowded in the middle
  • Easy for the pairs to end up in straight lines with no passing angles

Best for

Teams learning the idea of working in pairs and covering for a teammate.

Coaching tip

Ask each pair to stand at an angle to one another, never side by side.

Want it filled in for you?

The free SOXY app does the parts a web page cannot. It keeps your roster, knows which players have said they are coming, and fills all four quarters so playing time comes out even. It rotates the goalkeeper, lets you drag players between positions, saves a lineup for every game, and prints this same sheet with the field, both coaches and the referees already on it.
