The 7v7 2-3-1 formation

The 2-3-1 is the classic seven-a-side shape: two defenders, three midfielders and one striker. It teaches width, depth and support in the simplest possible way and maps neatly onto bigger formats later.

Strengths

  • Players learn clear positions without being stuck in them
  • Wide midfielders practise both attacking and defending
  • Natural triangles between the lines

Weaknesses

  • The striker can be isolated
  • Two defenders need help from midfield against quick attacks

Best for

Almost any seven-a-side team; the usual starting point.

Coaching tip

Rotate every player through all three lines over a season so nobody is only ever a defender.

Want it filled in for you?

The free SOXY app does the parts a web page cannot. It keeps your roster, knows which players have said they are coming, and fills all four quarters so playing time comes out even. It rotates the goalkeeper, lets you drag players between positions, saves a lineup for every game, and prints this same sheet with the field, both coaches and the referees already on it.
